Transformation towards climate-neutral steel production

With the planned construction of the direct reduction plant, which will be operated with renewable hydrogen and have a capacity of 2.5 million tons of directly reduced iron, thyssenkrupp Steel is continuing the transformation towards climate-neutral steel production. The company has had its climate targets confirmed on the basis of the scientifically sound guidelines of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Steel Europe is one of the first steelmakers to have its climate targets reviewed on a scientific basis and found to be in line with the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Agreement – both in terms of the short-term target for 2032 and the net-zero target for 2045, according to SBTi.

A state-of-the-art slitting line in Antwerp — located at the heart of Europe — enables Steel Europe to produce top-quality strip steel and ship it worldwide. Long-standing customer relationships, together with fast and precise execution of customer requirements, form the foundation of this success.

bluemint® Steel: CO2-reduced high-quality flat steel by thyssenkrupp Steel Europe


With bluemint® Steel, Steel Europe offers CO2-reduced steel in proven quality — a key building block on the path toward climate-neutral steel production by 2045 at the latest. This is made possible, among other things, by the targeted use of high-quality steel scrap in the existing blast furnace route, already reducing CO2 emissions by up to 64 percent today.

With the construction of a hydrogen-based direct reduction plant in Duisburg, Steel Europe is further advancing this transformation: the plant is set to produce up to 2.5 million tons of directly reduced iron and enable annual CO2 savings of up to 3.5 million tons. Renowned customers from the automotive, construction, and packaging industries already rely on bluemint® Steel today.

Electrical steel


With powercore®, Steel Europe provides the key material for the energy transition and electromobility. Whether in transformers, electric motors, or generators — the electrical steel meets the highest efficiency requirements and reduces energy losses to a minimum.

The portfolio includes non-grain-oriented electrical steel (NO) for applications with variable magnetic fields, such as electric motors and household appliances, as well as grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) for transformers and large generators, where directional magnetization is essential. With bluemint® steel grades, CO2 emissions in production can be reduced by up to 50 percent — while maintaining consistently high quality and a reliable supply chain from European manufacturing.

Cold rolled sheet & coated steel products


In the sheet steel segment, Steel Europe offers a broad range of surface-finished products in addition to cold-rolled sheet steel. Its portfolio of hot-dip coated sheet steel spans pure zinc and zinc-iron (galvannealed) coatings, zinc-magnesium finishes, and aluminum-based coatings such as hot-dip aluminized sheet steel. The range is complemented by electrogalvanized sheet steel.

Across more than ten finishing lines, Steel Europe produces surfaces for a wide variety of applications — offering excellent flatness, reduced coating thicknesses, and strong corrosion protection. Specialty products such as the hot-dip aluminized manganese-boron steel MBW® 1500+AS and the primetex® special texturing for a premium paint finish underline the segment's commitment to quality.

Composite material bondal®
Composite material bondal® from thyssenkrupp Steel Europe


With bondal®, Steel Europe has offered a proven sandwich material for noise reduction in vehicle construction for years. Recent studies show that the composite material also holds significant potential for acoustic optimization of electric drive motors and their power electronics in battery-powered vehicles.

While electric motors are generally quieter than conventional combustion engines, their noise emissions often fall within a frequency range that people perceive as particularly unpleasant. Studies confirm that an inverter cover made of bondal® noticeably reduces noise emissions from this central drive component. This is made possible by a property of the steel-plastic-steel composite that had previously received little attention: in addition to its typical structure-borne noise damping, formed bondal® components also provide airborne sound insulation, particularly at higher frequencies. Combined, these effects can reduce sound pressure levels in the immediate vicinity by up to 20 dB(A), corresponding to a reduction to one quarter of the original volume.

Beyond its acoustic performance, bondal® shares the property profile of high-quality sheet steel: cathodic corrosion protection, electromagnetic shielding, and full integration into the standard steel recycling cycle. Processing is possible on existing equipment, with forming behavior determined by the steel face sheets.

Hot strip

The hot strip portfolio at Steel Europe covers a broad spectrum, ranging from mild steels and structural steels to higher-strength micro-alloyed perform® steels. The material is available pickled or unpickled, in an extensive range of dimensions. This range is complemented by special products such as scalur®, with the tightest thickness tolerances, steel for line pipes, and tubor®, a manganese-boron steel for precision steel tubes.

The portfolio also includes C-steel, steel for pressure vessels, multiphase steel, and manganese-boron steel for hot form curing. This allows Steel Europe to meet the requirements of numerous industries, from automotive to plant engineering to the energy sector.

Organic coated strip & sheet
Organic coated strip & sheet pladur® by thyssenkrupp Steel Europe


As Europe's coil-coating pioneer, Steel Europe manufactures organically coated material solutions known for their quality and versatility. Under the pladur® brand, the segment serves customers in the household appliance, trailer, and door and gate industries, as well as the solar and energy market and high-end and industrial construction, with a broad product range. For 60 years, organically coated quality flat steel from thyssenkrupp Steel has stood for cost-effectiveness, functionality, processability, sustainability, and a wide variety of surfaces.

The foundation for this is the coil-coating process, which Steel Europe played a major role in shaping across Europe. In a single continuous production step, the composite material pladur® is created from corrosion-protected steel with tailored properties and paint or film coatings. The portfolio can be formed into nearly any shape without compromising quality, while also offering time and cost advantages over conventional coating methods.

Packaging steel
Packaging steel rasselstein® from thyssenkrupp Steel Europe


Under the rasselstein® brand, Steel Europe produces tinplate and tin-free steel at its Andernach site, in thicknesses ranging from 0.100 to 0.499 mm, with or without organic coating depending on customer requirements. The majority of the material, more than 90 percent, is used in packaging applications such as food and aerosol packaging. Increasingly, however, this versatile material is also finding applications beyond traditional packaging, including in the automotive and electronics industries.

rasselstein® packaging steel stands for continuously advancing material grades of premium quality. Working closely with customers, the Packaging Steel business unit develops solutions tailored to individual requirements and supports efforts to improve process and product efficiency. Precision steel strip


With precidur®, Steel Europe offers hot-rolled precision strip of the highest grade — produced by thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg, part of the Precision Steel business unit. The material stands out for its exceptionally tight thickness and profile tolerances, with widths up to 720 mm and thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 16 mm.

Unlike slit strip, precidur® features rounded edges free of burrs and cracks, ruling out embrittlement through cold work-hardening. Homogeneous material properties, top-tier surface quality, and a wide array of grades round out its profile — making it ideal for both direct forming processes and further processing by cold rolling. The portfolio spans soft, unalloyed steel through structural, case-hardening, and tempered/spring steel, as well as bainitic, TWIP, tool, and free-cutting steel.
